Ryan Babel has spoken out in defence of Mario Balotelli following his Instagram controversy…

Former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel has spoken out in defence of Mario Balotelli. The Dutchman has revealed his sympathy for Balotelli, and feels Liverpool are letting him down, just as they failed him during his time at Anfield.

Reports in the Daily Mirror explain that the forward, who was offloaded by Liverpool to Hoffenheim in January 2011, told reporters: “People think every player should be treated the same.

“But sometimes you have exceptional players who need a different approach to get the best out of them, and that is Mario. I don’t know him personally, but judging from the outside, he should have different support.”

Balotelli will be investigated by the FA, despite apologising for his controversial Super Mario joke on social media website Instagram. The controversial Liverpool striker was accused of making racist and anti-Semetic comments.

The Italian international said: “I apologize if I have offended anyone. The post was meant to be anti-racist with humour. I now understand that out of context may have the opposite effect.”
