Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland – Kolo Toure stars in bore draw…

Liverpool made it four games without defeat in all competitions after securing a 0-0 draw with Sunderland, who have proved hard to beat for many teams this season.

The Black Cats, who also held Chelsea and Everton last month, secured another point at Anfield, and were in all fairness, good value for the result, as the Reds failed to build on the momentum built up by last week’s success.

Brendan Rodgers left captain Steven Gerrard on the bench, despite his match winning heroics against Leicester, and it seemed as if he wasn’t the only one with an eye on next week’s crucial Champions League match with Basel.

Raheem Sterling had a late penalty appeal turned down, but the hosts had the excellent Kolo Toure and Lucas Leiva to thank for ensuring a very welcome second clean sheet in three games.

Under-fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made one excellent save, as he denied Jordi Gomez late on. Wes Brown and Connor Wickham also wasted chances for the visitors, and the goalless scoreline was almost inevitable.

Gerrard’s arrival mid-way through the second-half did bring some much needed life into an otherwise limp affair, but unlike against Stoke last weekend, even the captain’s arrival could not inspire the Reds to three points.

Rickie Lambert cut a frustratingly isolated figure up front for much of a poor game of football, while Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho both failed to impress, and were subsequently withdrawn in the second-half.
