Sunderland are interested in re-signing Fabio Borini in January window…

Sunderland have retained their interest in Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, and manager Gus Poyet has admitted that he’d jump at the chance to re-sign the Italian.

Reports on Goal.com explain that the 23-year-old was targeted by Poyet in the summer, but the move collapsed as Borini clung on to his hopes of playing at a higher level.

But the player has failed to score this season, and looks unlikely to be given another chance. Having impressed while on loan at the Stadium of Light last season, he’d be sure to be welcomed back on Wearside.

The forward’s prospects of regular first-team football at Anfield appear slim, with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers leaving Borini out of his squad that faced Sunderland at Anfield yesterday afternoon.

And Poyet is keen to strike a deal in January if the opportunity arises: “I would love to [sign Borini],” he told reporters. “It is difficult to explain [why the previous move collapsed].

“It was a long summer and the things everyone knows, we agreed a price and we flew to America [for Liverpool’s pre-season tour] and he didn’t come. The bottom line is he is not with us. I am trying to concentrate on what we have got.”
