Jordan Henderson: ‘My best is still to come’

Henderson vows to carry on improving…

Liverpool vice-captain Jordan Henderson has lauded his skipper Steven Gerrard, and promised fans that he’s not yet reached his peak.

The 24-year-old was made Gerrard’s understudy over the summer after Daniel Agger was sold to Brondby, and has captained the side on three occasions when Gerrard’s been rested.

“It was a huge honour and still is,” Henderson told the club’s official website.

“Obviously I know there’s only one captain and Stevie is our leader and our role model. I’ve always said he’s probably the best captain in football and everybody looks up to him.

“I feel I have learned a lot from him. I just try to continue to learn from him – on the field or off it. As vice-captain, I try to give him support if he ever needs it.

“I’ve only been here for a short space of time and I feel there’s still a lot more to come. Hopefully in the future I do have a big impact but I’ve got a lot of work to do. I’ll give it everything I’ve got to get there.”

Henderson was one of our very best players last season, and the ban he earned from his sending off against Manchester City was arguably just as crucial to us missing out on the title as Gerrard’s slip.

This campaign he’s struggled to reach his best level, but his passion and commitment to the cause cannot be questioned.

As a result of his versatility, he’s actually been used out of position on more than one occasion, which has probably affected his level, too.
