Ranking Liverpool’s 5 best players this term – surprising entrants included

Coutinho, Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel miss out…

We’ve not had an awful lot to shout about this season, but with the side on the back of a promising League Cup performance, and Daniel Sturridge slowly but surely approaching fitness – we can be positive about the start of 2015.

Here’s the five players who’ve impressed us most during the difficult start to this campaign, and why.

5) Jordan Henderson

Henderson hasn’t been anywhere near as good as he was in 2013/14, but this isn’t for the want of trying. He’s scored crucial goals, including a winner against West Brom, one in the win over Leicester, and one in the Champions League, too. The vice-captain has also assisted three goals, and his work-rate has been typically relentless. He’s perhaps struggled because of the variety of positions he’s been asked to play – but really – this is a compliment to his versatility. Henderson’s passion and commitment cannot be questioned, and if we’re to save our season, the 24-year-old will play a crucial role.

4) Adam Lallana

For somebody costing £26m, it could be argued that Lallana’s actually performed below par, but it’s important to remember that his mammoth fee is the choice of the club, not his. Compared to the rest of the Liverpool squad, Lallana’s often shown the most imagination, and not been afraid to try intricate passes or mazy dribbles. He’s contributed a modest two Premier League goals and one assist – but could relish the chance to perform in a freer more central role now that Brendan Rodgers is deploying a 3-4-3 formation.

3) Lucas

Like the man who pips him on this list (see next page), few thought Lucas would have a huge impact this season; with Steven Gerrard seemingly an automatic selection for the anchorman spot. However, Gerrard’s struggled to add the defensive steel and tracking required at times, and Lucas has been brought in a result, enabling our captain to play further forward. The Brazilian has been feisty, combative and disciplined. He doesn’t aid us play scintillating football, but he’s provided a much needed defensive base in midfield – and fans should appreciate the consistent effort he’s put in since arriving at the club seven years ago now.

2) Kolo Toure

Before the start of the season, Toure’s name was barely mentioned in discussions regarding potential starting XIs, and so on. Due to the form of Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren though, and the injury of Mamadou Sakho, Toure’s been called upon, and he hasn’t put one foot wrong. He won our November Player of the Month award as a result, and will surely be an automatic starter until his form drops off.

1) Raheem Sterling

It seems absurd to us that Sterling, easily our best player this term, has come under criticism for neutrals and even some fans, especially considering the fact he’s only just turned 20-years-old. He’s notched five goals in total, more than any other player, and five assists to boot – more than any teammate as well. Let’s just hope he agrees terms on a new contract.
