Six great Liverpool moments against Arsenal, including Martin Skrtel’s dramatic late header

Martin Skrtel’s 97th minute equaliser was the latest in a long line of heroic moments in Liverpool v Arsenal games…

Liverpool vs Arsenal is a fixture steeped in history, and in the wake of Martin Skrtel’s dramatic headed equaliser against the Gunners on Sunday, LFC Xtra has ranked their top six Reds strikes against the North London giants.

Which of these is your favourite?

6) Martin Skrtel (2014)

Liverpool dominated the first-half and deservedly took the lead when Philippe Coutinho struck in stoppage time. However, they were caught out at the back mere moments later, when Mathieu Debuchy headed in the equaliser. Oliver Giroud stabbed Arsenal in front mid-way through the second-half, and it looked as if Liverpool were heading for defeat until Skrtel popped up in the 97th minute to slam in an equaliser.

5) Robbie Fowler (1995)

Arsenal had been struggling in the league, losing six of their last seven games. They were closing in on a valuable draw at Anfield until Fowler popped up to grab the winner in the final minute. The Gunners were sick of the sight of Fowler, who had scored a hat-trick against them earlier in the season, taking less than five minutes to do so. The result kept Liverpool well on track for a top four finish.

4) Dirk Kuyt (2011)

If you thought Martin Skrtel’s 97th minute goal was late, then you need to think back to Kuyt’s 102nd minute penalty at the Emirates Stadium three years ago. Robin van Persie had scored from the spot five minutes earlier, but a dramatic game had one final twist in the depths of stoppage time, with the extended match caused by a clash of heads between Jamie Carragher and Jon Flanagan.

3) Neil Mellor (2004)

Liverpool’s brightest academy product, who would soon go on to play a key role in securing Champions League process against Olympiacos, the year the Reds won the competition. Prior to that, he grabbed Rafael Benitez three points against the team dubbed ‘the invincibles’, who had survived the previous season without losing a single game. He struck in stoppage time with score locked at 1-1, smashing the ball home from 25 yards.

2) Steven Gerrard (2008)

Liverpool were facing a topsy-turvy Champions League quarter-final, and were on their way out after Emmanuel Adebayor’s 84th minute goal. The Reds charged forward, and Ryan Babel was sent crashing to the ground in the penalty area. Gerrard kept his calm to slot home from the spot, and Babel then sealed a dramatic 5-3 aggregate win in stoppage time as Rafael Benitez’s side progressed to the semi-finals.

1) Michael Owen (2001)

The ultimate smash-and-grab on the ultimate stage. With Arsenal winning 1-0 in the FA Cup final in Cardiff, thanks to Freddie Ljungberg’s strike, Liverpool looked all but beaten. But in the 82nd minute a Gary McAllister free-kick wasn’t cleared, Fowler created uncertainty in the Arsenal defence, and Michael Owen pounced to level things up. Five minutes later Patrick Berger released Owen, who charged past Tony Adams and Lee Dixon before firing past David Seaman into the far corner.
