Kolo Toure Africa Cup of Nations call-up

Posted by

The defender will be out of action for the Reds for three weeks.

Liverpool will be without Kolo Toure from January 17 to February 8 after the defender was called up to the Ivory Coast’s Africa Cup of Nations squad.

The tournament will take place in Equatorial Guinea and Toure is part of the 23-man party that Herve Renard has chosen to take to the tournament.

The Ivorians are in Group D alongside Cameroon, Guinea and Mali, with two sides progressing from the group to the knockout stages.

Therefore Toure could be returning to Anfield as soon as January 28 should his nation fail to get through, but Renard’s men will be among the favourites to win the competition once again.

With Dejan Lovren continuing to struggle for form this season and Mamadou Sakho having had fitness concerns, the 33-year-old former Manchester City man has played a bigger part in 2014/15 than many would have perhaps expected.

Toure has made 12 appearances this term, taking his total since arriving on Merseyside in the summer of 2013 to 36.

Although often mocked the centre-back has had some impressive performances for us in recent times, with his display against Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League a real highlight.
