Rodgers says only established stars can replace Gerrard

Manager wants the hierarchy to spend.

Brendan Rodgers appears to have sent a message to the Liverpool hierarchy that they need to spend big following the news of Steven Gerrard’s departure.

It’s clear to everyone that replacing the captain is going to be a huge task and Rodgers himself is hoping to be given significant funds to try and make the transition as smooth as possible.

“The model at this football club is clear, we want to take young players and develop them into world-class ones, but that can be a long and a difficult process,” Rodgers was quoted by the Guardian.

“The owners know that, and they also know that not every player can be a developer if you are going to keep progressing.

“A large part of our squad will always be young players, but if you want to take those steps forward at times you have to look to bring in some ready-made players.”

Rodgers knows as well as we do that Gerrard leaving will have a huge effect on the team, even if his performances on the pitch have perhaps been below par in recent times.

The 34-year-old is such a huge figure around Anfield that the only way to stop the younger players becoming disillusioned is to sign a big name player.

Who will be available to take up that mantle remains to be seen, but hopefully the owners will pledge the funds to Rodgers to at least try and make it happen.
