Brendan Rodgers speaks James Milner, replacing Steven Gerrard & targeting the ‘world’s best’

Former midfielder Danny Murphy has named seven players Liverpool should consider targeting to replace the outgoing Steven Gerrard at the end of the season…

“There’s going to be lots of speculation between now, and the end of the season, about who Liverpool are going to bring in to replace Stevie,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“The Reds are going to have to bring in two midfielders to replace him, because he can do the attacking role and the defensive role, and here is my realistic list, in terms of finance.”

Here’s who he went for, and our own quick take on the potential Reds..

7) James Milner – Manchester City

“He’s on a free transfer. I’m not sure that he’s the answer to be honest but he has been linked with them.”

Cheers, Danny… Milner’s 29-years-old, but on a free transfer, it’s largely risk free, although his required waged would probably make him one of the highest paid players in the squad. Still, we could certainly do with his experience.

6) Sami Khedira – Real Madrid

“He’s not playing every week and is a World Cup winner with Germany. He’s powerful, strong and experienced. You wouldn’t think he would take time to settle in. Yes, his wages are going to be high, but you’re not going to have to pay super money to get him out of his contract at Real Madrid. His contract is not that far from being up. I know he’s been linked to Arsenal, but why didn’t they go for him in the summer?”

For us, Khedira would be the perfect target. In 2014 he won a Champions League and a World Cup, outlining his world-class credentials. yes, his wages would be extortionate, but the fact he wouldn’t cost anything in terms of a transfer fee levels this out. We’d be crazy to give Arsenal a free run at the German.

5) Yohan Cabaye – PSG

“He’s played in the Premier League before so he’s already got the experience. He’s a good creative midfielder, is only 28 years old and an international. The only problem with Cabaye is his wages. He’s gone to PSG and picked up a decent wage. Also, when he left Newcastle, he spoke about being back home in France.”

Doesn’t have the physicality or the drive to be a direct replacement for Gerrard, but his creative skills would add something to our midfield, certainly.

4) Moussa Sissoko – Newcastle United

“He looks an absolutely terrific box-to-box midfielder. He’s only 25 and a France international. He signed a six year deal at Newcastle and his wages aren’t going to be an issue. He’s going to be brilliant signing for somebody. Sissoko has been linked with a number of clubs in the window, so it looks like he might be on the move.”

Sissoko’s energy and power would boost us terrifically, but we’d likely have to pay the Premier League premium for his services, when cheaper alternatives are probably available around Europe.

3) Morgan Schneiderlin – Southampton

“Schneiderlin can play with Sissoko, and along with Henderson, because it looks like Lucas is on his last legs. He’s only 25. Yes, he signed a new contract, but you could get him out of Southampton because he’s an ambitious boy. He’s got Premier League experience, so wouldn’t need time to adjust. He’s a really good player.”

Fans will be crying out, ‘not another Southampton player,’ but the Frenchman is perhaps the one we should have signed in the first place… Defensively excellent, and a decent passer, too.

2) Yaya Toure – Manchester City

“The other one, to throw one out there, is Yaya Toure. Maybe his brother could persuade him to join Liverpool?”

We honestly don’t know where Murphy has plucked this one from… Any club in world football would take Toure, but his wages make him a highly unlikely target.

1) Koke – Atletico Madrid

“I don’t think they’d be able to get him out of Atletico Madrid but one of the best young Spanish midfielders around is Koke. He won’t be on big wages either and is only 22-year-old.”

The young Spaniard is phenomenal, and all set to develop into one of the world’s very best players. If we wanted to sign him, we’d unfortunately have to beat off likely competition from Barcelona and Manchester United.
