Speculation linking the player with a move to Anfield has been ongoing in the press since the summer, when the Reds were on the lookout for a potential replacement for Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona.

It was hoped that the Reds’ relationship with former boss Rafael Benitez – now in charge of the Italian giants – would enable us to make headway over a £30m deal, although our interest in the player was never confirmed.

And any chance of a prospective January move has been ended by Higuain’s latest comments, with the Argentine confirming his happiness in Serie A, with his quotes in the Daily Mail.

He said: “I am happy here. I have a contract here.” Speaking about the game itself, he then added: “Fortunately, we took control of a game that looked to be a difficult test.

“Lazio are a strong side to face but we have to win in order to overtake them in the table. This was an important game for us and now we need to look ahead to our next match.”

The World Cup star has scored 14 times in all competitions this season, including five goals in his last four games, leaving Napoli in third place in their league table, and in the knockout stage of the Europa League.
