After all, both Rodgers and Liverpool have a good record when it comes to the winter window. Here are the ten best deals we’ve ever made at the turn of the year:

10) Jordon Ibe

The teenage sensation has been thoroughly impressive during loan spells with Birmingham and Derby, and is now back in the Reds’ first-team squad. Signed from Wycombe Wanderers in January 2012.

9) Return of Robbie Fowler

Already a legendary figure in Liverpool’s history, Fowler cemented his iconic reputation by returning to Anfield in 2006, five years after first leaving. His second spell produced 12 goals in all competitions.

8) Alvaro Arbeloa

Arrived from Deportivo La Coruna in January 2007. He would make 66 league appearances for Liverpool before eventually being bought back by former club Real Madrid, where he started as an academy player.

7) Maxi Rodriguez

Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2010, and became something of a cult figure at Anfield. He scored 17 goals in 72 games for the Reds, and starred in our League Cup success in 2012, scoring against Chelsea in a 2-0 win.

6) Martin Skrtel

A cornerstone of Liverpool’s team for several years, the giant Slovakian first arrived at Anfield in 2008 from Zenit Saint Petersburg. He has since played 271 games for the club in all competitions, scoring 17 times.

5) Daniel Agger

Joined Liverpool from Brondby in 2006, and would star alongside Jamie Carragher in an extremely miserly defence. Injuries unfortunately took their toll, and he returned to his former club last summer after 232 games.

4) Javier Mascherano

Joined Liverpool after a brief spell at West Ham, arriving in January 2007. He would play 139 games, leading the Reds to the Champions League final, before leaving for Barcelona in 2010, and further establishing himself as a world class player.

3) Philippe Coutinho

The little Brazilian has been sensational for Liverpool since he arrived in 2013 from Inter Milan. An integral part of Brendan Rodgers’ side, he played a crucial role in our run to second place in the league last season.

2) Daniel Sturridge

Has barely stopped scoring since arriving at the club from Chelsea, also in 2013. Injuries have been the only thing restricting his otherwise sparkling form, which has seen him score 36 goals in 52 games.

1) Luis Suarez

Bought on the same day as Andy Carroll, who actually cost Liverpool substantially more money.

How their careers have changed since then. The Uruguayan bagged 82 goals in 133 games before departing for Barcelona in the summer.
