Would you take Clyne at Liverpool, Reds?

Reports in the English media today suggest that, along with Manchester United, we’re keen on sanctioning a summer deal for Southampton and England right-back Nathaniel Clyne…

The full-back has come on leaps and bounds under Ronald Koeman, and his form in 2014/15 earned him his international debut. In fact, he’s now ahead of our own Glen Johnson in the pecking order for the England right-back spot.

Clyne does seem like the kind of player Liverpool would target. He’s young, talented, English, has Premier League experience – and perhaps most tellingly – plays for Southampton!

However, he’d likely cost a premium fee because of his age and nationality…

The 23-year-old prides himself on his dribbling up the flank and his strong tackling, and he’s comfortable at playing short passes into midfield rather than kicking it long.

A new right-back is perhaps a priority in the summer, with Johnson likely to leave on the expiration of his contract, and young Javier Manquillo still inexperienced and raw. At the moment we’re using Lazar Markovic as a right wing-back, but his future likely lies in a more advanced position.

For the right price, Clyne could prove a smart acquisition – providing the Saints don’t hold us to ransom.
