After a slow start, the home side had the better of the game – defending well throughout, pushing forward more as the game wore on. Steven Gerrard hit the post on his return, but the game finished level.

Read the full Liverpool player ratings below:

GK) Simon Mignolet – 6

Had a surprisingly quiet night – had little chance with Hazard’s expertly taken penalty, which sent him the wrong way.

RCB) Emre Can – 6

Will feel hard done by to have given away the penalty. Thankfully for the Reds, he didn’t allow the incident to phase him and responded well, looking very confident on the ball.

LCB) Mamadou Sakho – 7

Looked solid throughout, dealing well with Chelsea’s considerable threat. Took no prisoners with his hard-man approach, but kept it fair throughout.

CB) Martin Skrtel – 7

Continued his battle with Diego Costa, dealing well with the powerful Spaniard and putting in a dominant performance in the air.

DM) Lucas Leiva – 7

A typical Lucas performance with the Brazilian working hard in front of the back four, helping restrict Chelsea’s chances and starting a number of counter attacks.

CM) Jordan Henderson – 6

Worked hard in the centre of the park, taking over the captain’s armband from Gerrard when he was replaced.

RM) Lazar Markovic – 6

A quiet night for the Serbian, for whom a blocked volley was arguably his most notable moment.

LM) Alberto Moreno – 7

Endured a couple of scrappy moments, but worked hard up and down the left hand side, never stopping running.

AM) Philippe Coutinho – 8

Made one brilliant run to set up Gerrard for the shot that hit the post, another good night for the Brazilian.

AM) Steven Gerrard – 6

Hit the post with one outstanding effort from range. Replaced mid-way through the second-half, having battled just to be fit for the game.

ST) Raheem Sterling – 8

Scored a wonderful solo goal to fully justify his extended winter break. His individual moment of brilliance has put the Reds in with a real chance of progressing.

Manager: Brendan Rodgers – 7

Cannot have many complaints about the way his team played – working hard to get back into the game after falling behind and deservedly equalising. He’ll just be disappointed not to get the win.

Subs:

1) Adam Lallana – 7 – Looked bright after coming on, caused plenty of problems.
