It’s no secret we interviewed a number of candidates for the manager’s job in 2012 following the exit of King Kenny, with some reports at the time claiming we close to signing now Everton boss Roberto Martinez!

But Ajax coach Frank de Boer has claimed he was also a candidate for the position and even turned down an offer from the club during that managerial hunt.
Strangely, Brendan Rodgers had also declined to speak with the club’s hierarchy about the vacant role when they were initially interested in our current boss, but luckily he was eventually convinced to join.
De Boer was a name mentioned at the time but it’s a surprise he came so close to taking charge.
“Two years ago I was very honoured that Liverpool asked me if I was interested in the job,” the Dutchman was quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“There still was other candidates also. But I just signed a new contract and I said you are too early at this moment.”
De Boer had won two titles in his first two seasons with the Dutch club when we supposedly approached him, and has since won two more.
