Emile Heskey joined the Trotters from Australian side Newcastle Jets late last year, scoring on debut against Blackburn Rovers. The 37-year-old has since made four appearances while has has, on occasion, been partnered up front by another former Premier League veteran – Eidur Gudjohnsen.

In November last year he played twice for the Liverpool Masters side in Singapore and Thailand, but is now back at his former side in the away dressing room.

Speaking about the surreal moment, he told the Daily Mirror: “It will be great, it will be wonderful, if I had hair on the back of my neck it would stand up.

“I wouldn’t say it will be a pinch-yourself-moment, but, yeah, at 37, would I have been thinking I would be playing against Liverpool at Anfield? Probably not, so I’m going to relish every moment of it.”

Former England international Heskey joined Liverpool for a club record £11m from Leicester City in 2000, going on to make 223 appearances for us in all competitions, scoring 60 goals and winning six major honours.

He was part of the treble winning side of 2000-01, forming a fearsome strike partnership with Michael Owen. He left the club for Birmingham City in 2004 and has since played for Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa.
