Could Liverpool make a surprise loan swoop for Marc-Andre Ter Stegen…

Intriguing reports in the Daily Express claim that Liverpool are chasing a loan move for Barcelona’s number two goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who has struggled for first-team opportunities so far this season.

The German is firmly behind Claudio Bravo in the Camp Nou pecking order and Brendan Rodgers is supposedly keen to investigate whether or not the Spanish giants would be willing to let him go.

Barcelona are not allowed to sign a replacement though due to their transfer ban, and it’s surely unlikely they’d part with one keeper when they’re heavily involved in a battle for the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

Both Bravo and the young German moved to the club at the start of the season as replacements for long-time number one Victor Valdes, who recently joined Manchester United. However, it’s 31-year-old Chilean Bravo who gets the nod in the league games.

According to the source, the 22-year-old has spoken openly about his frustration at being second choice and could jump at the chance to play regularly at a club of Liverpool’s stature.

Earlier this week, Ter Stegen said: “For now, the manager counts on me for the Cup and Champions League, but I’d like to play in the league. I want La Liga, even if Bravo is doing a good job.”

Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet has endured widespread criticism for his performances so far this season, but has improved somewhat in recent weeks – keeping three clean-sheets in the last four games – while being beaten just once by Eden Hazard’s penalty.

However, with Reds number two Brad Jones currently sidelined through injury, it has been suggested that Liverpool would look to bring in some form of competition for the Belgian – something Ter Stegen would certainly provide.
