Reports claim Liverpool will sign Danny Ings and loan him back to Burnley
Liverpool fans on Twitter are not especially happy at the Danny Ings news…

We have signed 18 British players over the last ten years, and have ranked them in terms of their success below. Click through the list below to see if the Ings deal is one best avoided:

18) Paul Konchesky (Fulham)

The full-back was brought in by Roy Hodgson, but like his manager he barely had a chance to settle at Anfield.

17) Joe Cole (Chelsea)

The former Chelsea man was sent-off on his debut and arguably never recovered, even after a year out on loan.

16) Andy Carroll (Newcastle United)

A man that could never possibly live up to his price tag or the expectations that came along with it, he was loaned out to West Ham before eventually leaving on a permanent deal.

15) Jonjo Shelvey (Charlton Athletic)

A promising young midfielder who never quite fulfilled his potential, he was eventually allowed a move to Swansea.

14) Jordon Ibe (Wycombe Wanderers)

Ibe has made a bright start to his Anfield career, but needs to play more games before he can be deemed a success.

13) Jermaine Pennant (Birmingham City)

The winger was a decent bit-part player for Liverpool, but lacked the quality to hold-down a first-team place.

12) Charlie Adam (Blackpool)

Brendan Rodgers’ arrival quickly saw the end of the Scottish midfielder, who didn’t match the manager’s desired style of play.

11) Rickie Lambert (Southampton)

He’s not set the world alight since his move from the South Coast, but he’s proved to be a decent bit-part player.

10) Robbie Fowler (Manchester City)

Returned to the club under Rafael Benitez, scoring a handful of goals before getting the farewell he deserved.

9) Adam Lallana (Southampton)

Liverpool spent big on the midfielder in the summer, and he’s only now starting to prove his worth. He still has some way to go to justify that fee completely however.

8) Stewart Downing (Aston Villa)

Another player who struggled to live up to expectations after being signed for an astronomical fee by Kenny Dalglish. He steadily improved under Brendan Rodgers, but was far from a regular.

7) Joe Allen (Swansea City)

The Welsh midfielder has made a slow start to life on Merseyside. He’s enjoyed plenty of game time, but is another player that’s not fully justified his transfer fee.

6) Craig Bellamy (Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City)

The Welshman was a steady scorer for Liverpool during two spells at the club, as well as being an Anfield favourite.

5) Peter Crouch (Southampton)

Crouch was at the height of his powers as he impressed for both club and country. The giant striker scored 22 league goals while with Liverpool, but brought plenty more to the team as well.

4) Glen Johnson (Portsmouth)

The full-back has been a regular in the Liverpool team for many years. He’s had to deal with plenty of frustration from supporters, but continues to work hard.

3) Jordan Henderson (Sunderland)

The central midfielder is likely to be the eventual successor to Steven Gerrard as club captain. His performances have continued to improve in recent years.

2) Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea)

With the exception of his injury difficulties this season, Sturridge has not stopped scoring for Liverpool. He’ll go down as one of the best attacking signings in a generation.

1) Raheem Sterling (Queens Park Rangers)

The youngster has quickly developed into one of our most exceptional talents after being picked up on the cheap by Rafael Benitez. Still only 20, his potential is virtually limitless.
