Origi, 19, joined the Reds last summer in a £10m deal, but was sent straight back to his former club on a season-long loan deal. Liverpool held talks over cutting the switch short, but failed to reach an agreement.

The World Cup starlet has only scored three league goals so far this season, but was seen by Rodgers as the ideal solution to his side’s goalscoring problems.

Speaking about his young striker, Rodgers was quoted by the Daily Star as saying: “It was [tempting to bring him back early] but knowing we would not have him this season was something I had resigned myself to in the summer.

“Of course, at the beginning of the season when we were looking for goals and needed that pace and pressure at the top of the field it is you something you look at and hope you had him here.

“I always knew though he was going to be there for the season, it was very clear in the contract, and I look forward to getting him in the summer.”

Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have all struggled for form so far this season, often leaving Raheem Sterling to play as a make-shift centre forward in the absence of the injured Daniel Sturridge.

However, Sturridge made a successful return from his five-month lay-off late last month, ending any possibility of Origi being recalled or another striker being signed, with Rodgers determined to work with what he has.
