German football expert says Liverpool’s Emre Can has proved him wrong

Emre Can has finally earned the approval of one dubious German football expert…

Jan Aage Fjortoft has finally admitted that he was wrong when he predicted Emre Can would be a failure at Liverpool, tweeting his praise of the 21-year-old midfielder who has been in excellent form over the last two months.

The Reds’ defensive injury crisis pressed Can into action as an emergency centre-half back in December, but he has since made the position his own with a series of impressive performances.

Liverpool have only conceded eight goals in their last 12 games in all competitions, with Can playing on the right of Brendan Rodgers’ new-look back three alongside Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.

Can arrived on Merseyside last summer in a £10m deal from Bayer Leverkusen, where he made 29 appearances – primarily as a holding midfielder.

The German Under-21 international struggled to hold down a place in the Liverpool team during the early part of the season, but has since impressed former Swindon Town, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Barnsley star Fjortoft.

“I don’t think he is a good signing, I think he’s an average player in Germany,” the former Norwegian international had previously told the Daily Express.

“But Brendan Rodgers has shown before that he’s a much better manager than Jan Aage Fjortoft so we have to trust him in that department. I can’t see that he will improve Liverpool Football Club.”

However, Fjortoft has now admitted he was wrong.

“Just deleted my “Emre Can is not a great Liverpool- signing” – tweet. He is doing great at a centre-half- role. Never saw that coming,” he concluded.
