French journalist Julien Laurens: ‘Brendan Rodgers really likes Alexandre Lacazette’

Rodgers fancies Lacazette…

Respected journalist Julien Laurens, who works for Le Parisien and features on BT Sport’s European Football Show, told the Sports Review that while he isn’t sure Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette is ready for a move yet, our manager is very interested in him…

The 23-year-old striker currently stars for Lyon in Ligue 1 and the French national side, and only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have scored more league goals than Lacazette this term – who’s notched 21 times in 22 outings.

Laurens reckons that the forward could leave this summer providing Lyon win the title, but thinks he might stay for one more season if PSG or Marseille pip them to top spot.

“I think if Lyon win the league, he will go,” Laurens began.

“If they qualify for the Champions league by finishing second or third I think he might give it another year.

“I think he has always wanted to be at the top level and play in the Champions League with his home club.”

Strangely though, Laurens reckons that, despite Lacazette’s goal record this term, he might not be strong enough to move outside of France just yet.

“It’s his first really big season and I’m just not sure if he is good enough already for a top-four club in England,” he said.

“I think the Bundesliga will suit him more than any other league.

“But as I said, I’m just not sure if he is ready for that just yet.”

“I really believe he would do well in the Bundesliga but I think he prefers England and he might try come over here.”

Most relevantly for Liverpool fans however, are these following quotes:

“I think Brendan Rodgers really likes him.

“Rodgers likes those types of players that can play anywhere up front and with a lot of movement, so I think he could eventually fit in well there.”

Laurens is right, too. Lacazette is comfortable on either wing, or can play centrally as and out and out striker as he has done this season. Pace and finishing are his primary assets – and a player of his calibre would have been mightily handy this term during the months Daniel Sturridge sat on the sidelines injured.

We’ve been continually linked with Lacazette for most of the season, and while there’s no guarantees we’ll make a summer move – the comments from Laurens suggest that an offer may well be in future consideration.
