At 3.06pm there will be a one-minute silence, while the singing of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ will take place around 40 minutes later. Tickets must be purchased by the end of March for fans wishing to attend the event.

The full statement on Liverpool’s official website also carries quotes from Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, who said: “Every day we continue to remember those who lost their lives.

“During this 26th anniversary service we will turn on a light for each and every life that was extinguished prematurely and the eternal flame of the Hillsborough Memorial will continue to light our way through the darkest days.

“We urge you to obtain your ticket as early as possible and we have put a closing date of Tuesday March 31 so we can plan accordingly. We have limited the amount of tickets due to the construction works at Anfield so please only request one if you plan on attending to avoid disappointing people.

“For many, April 15 may be a working day and there will be those who are unable to attend. We invite you to join us in thought and spirit and keep us in your prayers at this difficult time.”
