Since featuring in the role against Burnley on Boxing Day, Liverpool have gone unbeaten in the league and now sit just four points adrift of the Champions League places.

The 21-year-old, who came to us from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, arrived at the club as a midfielder, but has since found a new home in defence.

Following injuries to Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva, there has been plenty of talk about the German returning to a more central role, but the player himself is relaxed about the decision.

Can, who was quoted by Liverpool’s official website, said: “From my point of view, it doesn’t matter where I play. The main thing is to be on the pitch where I can help the team.

“If I can help the team by playing in midfield, then I will play in midfield. If I am needed at the back, I will play in defence.

“I’m fitter now and it means I can perform. Luckily, the manager is playing me and I am gaining in confidence the more I play. Now I am looking to produce consistency in my game and good performances.”

Earlier this week, assistant manager Colin Pascoe praised Can’s leadership qualities, something which the youngster admitted that he’s been working on since finding himself as a regular in the team.

“I am only 21 but I am the type of player that talks on the pitch,” he explained.

“That’s the way I am and I have always been like that. I can’t see myself changing; I think it’s just my way that pushes me into taking on a leadership role on the pitch.”

Can also praised the Liverpool supporters, who have got behind him in their typically passionate fashion since his arrival at the club. He said: “I go on Instagram and Facebook a lot and I have read a lot of comments from supporters. It makes me very happy.

“Liverpool have brilliant fans and they’re always behind the team, both in good and bad times – and that is fantastic. I keep hearing that I am becoming a fans’ favourite and it feels great.”
