Leto was using a barbell which is believed to have fallen on his head. He was initially sent home from training, but after later complaining of headaches he was rushed to hospital and placed in intensive care.

Reports in the Liverpool Echo explain that the 28-year-old will require an operation within 48 hours. While his life is not believed to be in danger, it is expected that he’ll take between four and six months to recover.

Leto currently plays for Argentine club Lanus, on loan from Italian side Catania. Since leaving Liverpool, he’s also played for Olympiacos and Panathinaikos in Greece.

He made his Reds debut against Toulouse in a 4-0 win. The Champions League qualifier was followed by another European match and two League Cup appearances, but his inability to land a work permit meant he never made his Premier League bow.
