His manager Brendan Rodgers though was quick to praise Lovren’s performance during normal time – and said it was just bad luck that it ended the way it did.

“I feel sorry for Dejan because he had played really well in the game, but someone has to miss, and unfortunately it was us,” Rodgers began.

“Dejan was happy to take a pen – you see the five penalties takers were all confident. The four before had experience before in a penalty competition this season, and they were confident. It was just a shame it ended that way.”

To be fair to the Croat, while he should be hitting the target, he DID step up – which for someone who’s had such a difficult season, is impressive.
