Edin Dzeko scored for the visitors, but the Reds were not to be denied after an excellent team performance. The result moves us above Southampton into fifth place in the Premier League.

Read the full Liverpool player ratings below:

GK) Simon Mignolet – 6/10

The Belgian could do little about Edin Dzeko’s goal, and in all honestly had little else to do. He was as equally astute at coming out to gather loose balls and crosses as he has been in recent weeks – no complaints.

RCB) Emre Can – 8/10

Another very solid performance from the German. Excellent at the back, and dangerous coming forward as Liverpool upped the pressure on their opponents late in the game. The 21-year-old’s potential is virtually limitless.

CB) Martin Skrtel – 7/10

Excellent leadership at the back from the Slovakian, who kept City’s attacking players under wraps throughout the game. Skrtel has continued to improve after a difficult start to the season, and looks back to his imperious best. Recently, he’s been absolutely outstanding defensively.

LCB) Dejan Lovren – 6/10

A couple of shaky moments, particularly in the first-half when he stood staring at Mignolet, waiting for his goalkeeper to rescue the situation, but all in all, a morale boosting performance from the under-fire Croatian.

DM) Joe Allen – 8/10

An outstanding performance from the Welsh midfielder, who is quietly having the best month of his Reds career. He controlled the game in the midfield, while he also kept City’s star men very quiet. We were petrified about Joe Allen v Yaya Toure this morning. We needn’t be.

CM) Jordan Henderson – 8/10

A wonderful goal. The captain capitalised on his mid-week break to turn in a truly fantastic performance in this one. His work-rate has never been questioned, but today he added that extra bit of quality that Reds fans have been craving.

RM) Lazar Markovic – 6/10 (Sturridge – 76′)

Worked hard down the right flank. The Serbian did some great tracking back defensively, considering it’s not a position that’s particularly natural to him, but also got forward well in support of Liverpool attacks. His end product was poor – but it’s easy to forget he’s only 20.

LM) Alberto Moreno – 7/10 (Toure – 83′)

The Spaniard will be delighted to have put memories of his first game against City behind him with an excellent performance today. Like Markovic, he worked hard up and down his side and caused plenty of problems.

AM) Adam Lallana – 8/10

A very encouraging performance from the summer signing. Lallana has endured a mixed start to his Liverpool career, but was a constant thorn in City’s side today, and was unlucky not to score.

AM) Philippe Coutinho – 9/10

What more can be said about the Brazilian – he’s truly sensational. He was already lighting up the game with an incredibly skilful performance, before he produced a wonderful goal to win the game for the Reds! If he’d perhaps have bagged another – he gets a 10. Jaw-dropping.

ST) Raheem Sterling – 7/10

Led the line well, working hard throughout the game and thoroughly silencing his critics. Vincent Kompany will be suffering from headaches after trying to keep track of the youngster – because there was little stopping him today.

Subs:

1) Daniel Sturridge – 5/10 – Should have scored when he went through on goal late on

2) Kolo Toure – 6/10 – Added a bit of extra protection in the closing stages
