However, Liverpool have had a number of quality South American players come and go at Anfield in the Premier League era. Is Coutinho the best yet? Click through our list below to find out our opinion…

5) Maxi Rodriguez (2010-2012)

Maxi arrived at Anfield in January 2010, during the start of a difficult time for the Reds where we were regularly struggling for results. The Argentine was one of the few bright lights in the final days under Rafael Benitez, scoring 17 goals in 72 games during his two-and-a-half year stay. He netted two hat-tricks in wins over Birmingham City and Fulham, while he also scored twice at Stamford Bridge in two separate games in 2011.

4) Lucas Leiva (2007-Present)

The Brazilian has been a fine servant for Liverpool over the years, making 268 appearances thus far. Lucas hasn’t scored for Liverpool in the last four years, but offers a lot more to the team with his combative style in midfield, which has long gone under-appreciated. The 28-year-old has been an integral part of our revival again this season, playing the holding role in our new-look 3-4-3 formation and doing a great job of protecting the back three.

3) Javier Mascherano (2007-2010)

After an indifferent start to his Premier League career with West Ham United, there were a few raised eyebrows when Liverpool signed the promising Argentine youngster. Thankfully, he definitely didn’t disappoint. The defensive midfielder played an important role in leading the Reds to a second place finish and a Champions League final, before eventually departing for Barcelona, where he has enjoyed even more success.

2) Philippe Coutinho (2013-Present)

Still only 22, the Brazilian arrived at Liverpool from Inter Milan for just £8.5m in January 2013. From the outset the youngster showed plenty of promise, but it’s only recently that he’s added goals to his already excellent approach play. He’s now found the net 13 times in 88 games for the club, including two outstanding recent efforts against Southampton and Manchester City. His potential is virtually limitless, and he’ll no doubt be number one in this list before too long.

1) Luis Suarez (2011-2014)

It’s easy to see why Liverpool made Suarez one of the most expensive players of all time when they sold him to Barcelona for £75m in the last summer transfer window. The Uruguayan enjoyed his best goalscoring form last season, when he struck 31 times in the Premier League alone, with his overall tally for the club reading an almost equally impressive count of 82 goals in 133 games. A firm fan favourite, and deservedly so.
