After leading the Reds to three consecutive Premier League victories – which included superb individual goals against both Burnley and Manchester City – Henderson is the toast of Merseyside.

However, he still has plenty to live up to. In the list below, we’ve ranked every Premier League captain of the Premier League era. Where will Henderson rank in the future? That remains to be seen…

8) Mark Wright (1991-1993)

Liverpool made a slow start to life in the Premier League under the leadership of their veteran defender, who retired from club football in 1998. He did however inspire an FA Cup victory in 2002.

7) Jamie Redknapp (1999-2002)

The skilful midfielder led the Reds into the 21st century, although he didn’t feature in any of the five cup finals we played in during 2001. He was an unused substitute for the Charity Shield and Super Cup victories.

6) Paul Ince (1997-1999)

Ince led Liverpool during a lengthy transitional period for the Reds, which saw them go without a trophy during his two years at the club. Liverpool finished seventh during his second season at the club.

5) Robbie Fowler (2000-2001)

The iconic striker shared the leadership responsibilities with the Reds during Redknapp’s absence. He played an integral part in us lifting an unprecedented five trophies in 2001.

4) Sami Hyypia (2000-2003)

Like Fowler, the centre-back filled in for Redknapp, and helped Liverpool enjoy a successful start to the new millennium. The legendary defender remained with the Reds until 2009, playing over 400 games.

3) John Barnes (1996-1997)

The winger enjoyed his fair share of success during his early days at Liverpool, and for the most part was unable to recreate that during his short spell as captain – which also marked the end of his Reds career. However, a young Jamie Carragher still labelled Barnes the best player he ever played with.

2) Ian Rush (1993-1996)

The iconic striker was handed the captain’s armband in the final years of his second stint at the club. The Reds had been struggling prior to his appointment, and Rush helped inspire something of a revival to see us rise back up the table.

1) Steven Gerrard (2003-Present)

Undoubtedly the greatest captain, and arguably greatest player in Liverpool history. The hero of our 2005 Champions League win, and the inspiration behind our FA Cup success two years later, he’s always been there in our moments of need. He will be sorely missed when he leaves for LA Galaxy next summer.
