The Anfield faithful first revealed the huge tribute in January, ahead of our Capital One Cup game with Chelsea, an act that proved to be much to the delight of the humbled captain.

Speaking about the moment he spotted the larger-than-life flag, he said: “It was a surprise and it choked me up when I saw it. The size of it and the message on it – it tells me I have been doing a decent job over the years.

“I got my card marked [about it] a couple of days before. Someone text me, so I sent [the lads who made it] a shirt and a big thanks to them. You just have to look at the company that it’s in.

“You see flags of Suarez, Shankly, Fowler, Benitez, Carragher and all the legends who have been here over the years. So to get in amongst that company with a big flag is a really proud moment for me.

“But I’m not finished. I want to continue to make the people proud; the people who make these flags and all the other supporters out there as well.”

The 34-year-old midfielder has been with the Reds for his entire career, a record spanning almost three decades and dating back to his early days in the youth team. However, he’s set to leave for MLS side LA Galaxy this summer, as his final contract on Merseyside comes to an end.

Gerrard is currently sidelined by injury, but could return to play some part in tomorrow’s FA Cup clash with Blackburn Rovers, as he aims for a romantic finale to his Liverpool career.

The FA Cup final takes place on Gerrard’s 35th birthday, and everyone associated with Liverpool would dearly love to see the long-serving captain lift the famous trophy as his final act for the club.
