The Daily Mirror has confirmed that talks between Henderson’s representatives and the Reds hierarchy ‘turned sour’ after an £80k-a-week deal was rejected in November, with no further talks having taken place since.

Henderson’s stay at Anfield will finish to an end at the end of next season unless an extension is penned, and Brendan Rodgers will no doubt be eager to tie down a player that has been an integral part of his Reds revival since the turn of the year.

The 24-year-old has been earmarked as a future Liverpool captain, and has skippered the team over the last month in the absence of Steven Gerrard – scoring brilliant individual goals against both Manchester City and Burnley.

Rodgers and co have clamped down on excessive salaries in recent years, and the offer at the back-end of last year was thought to include a rise of just £15,000. However, Henderson wants closer to £100,000-per-week, as his people think this is a fairer representation of his importance to the team.

Gerrard was earning 100k a decade ago, while other major teams will all pay more to their key players. Manchester City and Arsenal have both expressed a passing interest in Henderson in the past, and will no doubt be keeping an eye on the situation.

Henderson remains keen to stay at Anfield, but knows that this will be the most important contract of his career, and he is prepared to wait before committing the best years of his footballing life to anyone.
