The 33-year-old is out of contract in the summer and despite playing 18 games this season he has said he may look for first-team football with another team.

Whilst only 12 of those 18 appearances were starts, Toure has developed into a reliable face in the Liverpool squad who can be called upon when needed to put in a performance.

With the summer fast approaching though, the Ivorian is likely to fall even further down the pecking order if we do invest in further reinforcements at the back.

It is this which Toure has hinted is the reason behind his reluctance to commit as yet.

“My agent is talking to the club so we will see in a few days,” Toure said, reports Daily Star.

“The club have to think and I have to think as well. It is a decision [to stay as a squad member or look for first team football] and that is why I need to think very hard and then take a decision and stick with it.

“It is very important to know what you are facing. Whether you are going to be playing or not. I need to do the right thing for me and my family.”

Toure came on at the weekend against Blackburn to replace an injured Martin Skrtel and put it yet another assured performance.

It certainly would be hard to lose someone as experienced as the centre-back, but if we can find a better alternative who could properly challenge for the first team, we will have to put the club first.
