The summer arrival from Bayer Leverkusen has been in fine form so far this season, making his name as part of Brendan Rodgers’ new-look three man defence, but how should we be pronouncing his name when we praise him?

According to Turkish Football, Emre is an extremely popular name in Turkey, meaning ‘close friend’ or ‘older brother’. The name should be pronounced: Eh-m-r-eh.

While this is fairly simple, the name ‘Can’ causes more issues. The letter C has a different sound in Turkey than it does in England, meaning it can be closer associated with the letter J, as in ‘Jelly’ or ‘Junk’.

Therefore, the correct pronunciation would be, Eh-me-ray Jun. Can means spirit, heart and life in Turkey, where names often have literal meanings.

You can see a similar example with youth team player Samed Yesil, whose name translates to ‘The Eternal Green’.
