The team have been on a sensational run of form going 12 Premier League matches unbeaten with victories over Champions League rivals Southampton, Manchester City and Tottenham.

However, despite our now close proximity to our rivals – United are only two points ahead in fourth with Arsenal a further point afield in third – Gerrard says our great run to get us back in contention will count for absolutely nothing as we enter this crucial period of the season.

“Winning our last four league games has certainly improved our chances of finishing in the top four,” said Gerrard, reports Liverpool’s Official website.

“At the same time we know our recent good run has guaranteed absolutely nothing.

“After our up-and-down start to the season, all it’s done is get us in contention for a Champions League spot. Plenty of other teams are fighting for the same objective.

Gerrard scored a crucial penalty against Tottenham last month – a match we eventually won 3-2 – before having to go off injury with a hamstring issue.

However, the skipper looks set to return against Swansea City on Monday night crucially just before key games with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

“None of them are going to make it easy for us, so we have to keep picking up points. There are still a lot of games to be played and we haven’t achieved anything yet,” he said.

“In recent weeks the manager has had to utilise all of the squad and each player who has got on the pitch has taken their chance by performing well.

“I’ve said previously that choosing the starting XI should never be an easy task for the boss and when everyone is available that will certainly be the case.”
