We reported earlier today that the Reds starlet has ruled out signing a new deal until at least next summer, by which point he will have two years left to run on his existing, £35,000-per-week contract.

However, the Kop boss is confident that Sterling will put pen to paper when the time comes, along with vice captain Jordan Henderson – whose current deal ends a year before Sterling’s in 2016.

Reports in the Daily Express claim that Sterling’s representatives held further talks with the Liverpool hierarchy this week, but was unable to come to an agreement, despite an offer of around 100k known to be on the table.

Sterling, who is our joint top scorer so far this season with ten goals in all competitions, has been speculatively linked with summer moves to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but Rodgers has no doubts as to where his loyalties lie.

He said: “I am relaxed about the Raheem situation. He has a couple of years to go. It is quite obvious that Liverpool Football Club is the best option for him.

“He has just turned 20 in December and he has already made 114 appearances. He has a great opportunity and for any young player there is a great opportunity here.

“We have a track record of developing talents and there will be more of those players like Raheem who will get that opportunity. I speak to Raheem about his football.

“Players have to leave the negotiations to their representatives and focus on the football. The club wants to ensure Raheem and Jordan Henderson have a future here.”
