One of the most popular talking points among Liverpool supporters this month has been the upcoming Anfield charity game, which has also become known as Steven Gerrard’s second testimonial.

So we’ve decided that now is an apt as time as any to put together a team of the best players our legendary captain has ever played with.

Do you think our No. 8 would agree with this selection of stars? Check our our selection below…

GK) Pepe Reina

Liverpool have not been blessed with many world class goalkeepers in the Premier League era, but the Spaniard was definitely an exception. He played almost 400 games for the Reds before leaving for Munich last year.

RB) Steve Finnan

Not a big name, but a joyfully consistent full-back that Liverpool have struggled to replace. The now retired Republic of Ireland international played 217 games for the Reds after making his way up from non-league.

LB) John Arne Riise

When the Norwegian hit one, it stayed hit – as former Manchester United forward Alan Smith can no doubt confirm. The full-back scored 30 goals during his 339 games for the Reds, with whom he stayed for seven years.

CB) Jamie Carragher

One of, if not the greatest defender Liverpool have ever produced. The former academy graduate went on to play 737 games for us in all competitions, before calling it a day after 17 seasons with the first-team.

CB) Sami Hyypia

One of the Reds’ best buys of all time. The Finnish star arrived in 1999 for just £2.6m from Willem II, and went on to play over 400 times in all competitions, scoring 35 goals – including the memorable one against Juventus on route to the 2005 Champions League title.

CM) Javier Mascherano

The Argentine arrived at Anfield after a short-lived and controversial spell with West Ham United. He quickly bit that behind him with a series of increasingly impressive displays – a trait that eventually earned him a move to Barcelona after 139 games.

CM) Xabi Alonso

One of the best midfield players from any club of the modern era. The ice cool playmaker was incredible alongside Steven Gerrard during his time with us, and it was a sad day when the Spaniard moved to Real Madrid in 2009.

CM) Jordan Henderson

The only man representing the current crop of Liverpool stars. The 24-year-old has been tipped as the successor to the MLS-bound Gerrard, and has been steadily growing into those mighty shoes with some fine performances in recent weeks.

ST) Fernando Torres

The Spaniard has never truly recovered from leaving Liverpool. Thankfully, he was very good when he did wear the red shirt. Torres scored 81 goals in just 142 games for the Reds, but cruelly never won a trophy to show for it.

ST) Luis Suarez

If Liverpool fans thought Torres was good, then they were blown away by the Uruguayan, who of course left us last summer to join Barcelona. Suarez bagged 82 goals in 133 games for the club, and also won the League Cup.

ST) Michael Owen

Completing the front three and the team is one of the best players to ever come out of the Liverpool academy… it’s just a shame what he’s done with his career since leaving! Owen netted 158 times in 297 games for us.
