Indeed, the Belgian might not even be a Liverpool player. According to the Daily Star, Manchester United wanted to sign the goalkeeper, two years before his £9m move from Sunderland to Anfield.

After keeping 11 clean sheets in 40 games for the Black Cats, his increasingly impressive displays turned heads at Old Trafford, when the now excellent David de Gea was struggling to adapt to life in English football.

The Star also claims that Arsenal were watching Mignolet, who moved to the Stadium of Light for just £2m in 2010.

Thankfully, it was Liverpool who won out, as Brendan Rodgers secured a replacement for the long-serving Reds stopper Pepe Reina.

Mignolet was the source of plenty of criticism earlier this season, as he struggled for consistency, but he’s turned things around since the turn of the year. This week’s 1-0 win at the Liberty Stadium saw him claim his sixth consecutive clean sheet away from home, equalling a club record.
