The sensational German said of how just wearing the Liverpool shirt was honour enough but that he wanted to at least try and get the number 23 because of the significance it holds with the club.

Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler are just two of the most recent famous faces to don that particular shirt and Can definitely seems eager to carry on their formidable legacy.

“I’m obviously aware of the importance of number 23 in Liverpool history,” he said, reports Daily Star.

“It’s a big honour for me to wear the number 23 after Carragher retired but I don’t feel any extra pressure as such.

“At the end of the day it’s a number that you play and the team has to pick a number.

“For me it wouldn’t make a difference to wear 23 or 99, I always go out there and do my best for the team.

“But I definitely wanted the number 23 because there is a high importance for this number – I actively asked for it.”

Can has been nothing short of a revelation since he arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer and has quickly become a key part of the Reds defence.

In years to come the £9.75 million shelled out will no doubt be seen as a bargain as he continues to grow into his role and become accustomed to the league.
