The 20-year-old scored England’s third goal of the evening – his first for the Three Lions – in a comfortable 4-0 victory, while Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Harry Kane completed the rout.

Hodgson’s side have made a perfect start to their qualification campaign, with five wins out of five, and are in fine form heading into Tuesday’s friendly match with Italy in Turin.

However, they will have to take on the Azzuri without the talented Reds forward, who will now receive treatment on a recurring toe issue. Sterling will have an injection on the injury, which will hopefully ensure a speedy recovery.

Everton left-back Leighton Baines and Manchester City’s James Milner have also been released, with reports in the Liverpool Echo confirming the departures of all three players.
