Could Barcelona make a shock move for Glen Johnson when his Liverpool contract expires?

The Spanish press is today reporting that Liverpool defender Glen Johnson is a surprise target for Barcelona, who are looking for an experienced full-back capable of replacing the Paris-bound Dani Alves.

Their reports have since been picked up by the Liverpool Echo, who explain that Johnson has been recommended to the Camp Nou side, as they begin their search for a new player.

Dani Alves is believed to have signed a pre-contract agreement with Paris Saint Germain, and will join the French champions when his current contract expires at the end of the season.

Despite Barcelona’s apparent interest in Johnson, there is still a number of obstacles preventing Barcelona from making their move. The La Liga side are, of course, banned from buying players until January 2016, but whether this rule will also apply to free agents is currently unclear.

Manager Luis Enrique is also thought to be unimpressed with Johnson’s recent injury record. The 30-year-old has featured 21 times for the Reds so far this season, with just ten starts in the Premier League.

Johnson is looking increasingly unlikely to be handed an extended stay at Anfield, with time running out on his current contract. Manager Brendan Rodgers has offered the defender a new deal, but only on reduced terms.
