Torres is one of us, once again…

Collectively yesterday, Liverpool forgave Fernando Torres for leaving to join Chelsea – and sung the Spaniard’s famous Anfield song as he emerged onto the pitch.

The striker returned as part of Steven Gerrard’s XI for the Liverpool All-Star Charity Match, and came on to a rousing reception at half-time.

It was unsure whether the legendary striker, whose stock has fallen heavily since leaving us in 2011, would get a good reception, with some supporters still bitter about his £50m departure…

But the good will and positive vibes created a wonderful atmosphere, and both Torres and Luis Suarez were serenaded by the Kop upon their introduction.

“It was very emotional, I didn’t know how to react,” Torres told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I wasn’t expecting them to sing the song.

“I still remember the great games we had here at Anfield in the Champions League, in the league and fighting for trophies. I have the song in my head, it was so important for me.

“Those three-and-a-half years changed my entire life and career. I remember the song from the Kop in important games. To hear that once again is something I will never, ever forget.”

“It’s difficult to explain what you feel when you are at Anfield and you can play a football match here. It’s difficult to explain when you are in the home team – it’s a bit different when you are in the away team.

“Today was a day I’ll never forget, for sure. It was so emotional to play with my teammates again; we had a great time playing together here for Liverpool.

“And especially the reaction of all the supporters. Everybody knows Liverpool fans are different class. Today is a day to remember for me. I am lucky to be able to be here and I just want to thank everybody for their welcome.”

Torres currently plies his trade at boyhood club Atletico Madrid, following unsuccessful spells at Chelsea and AC Milan since he left us.

It would have been painful to watch Torres bag in goals for other clubs, but we never really had to suffer in that respect, which perhaps helped him get the kind reception on Sunday.
