Sterling hit the headlines over his contract situation once again this morning after an extensive interview with the BBC, where he opened up about his refusal to sign a new Liverpool deal – describing the Gunners’ supposed interest as “quite flattering”.

But speaking in his press conference ahead of the game with Arsenal at the Emirates this weekend, Arsene Wenger refused to discuss Sterling in terms of a summer transfer.

“Sterling is a top player,” said the Frenchman, according to the Daily Mirror.

“I don’t want to get involved in that just 48 hours before game.”

The football world was in shock following the 27-minute interview Sterling gave to the BBC yesterday, where he attempted to justify why he had turned down a number of lucrative Liverpool contract offers over the course of the season…

Sterling effectively claimed the departure of Luis Suarez last summer and the exit of Steven Gerrard at the end of this season has forced him to re-evaluate his future – though there’s still suggestions from the likes of Chris Bascombe in the Telegraph that it’s all to do with his weekly wage packet.

Whilst many Reds will no doubt be in the doldrums today and feel Sterling’s summer exit is now all but confirmed, we have to remember that nothing is finalised, and he still could extend his deal.

And even if he doesn’t, the club will be in a healthy situation; likely receiving a huge transfer fee which will provide Rodgers with the ability to revamp the squad and replace the winger in the summer.

But, alas, there is a certain sense of foreboding at the moment and we have to get our heads rights before Saturday to ensure our top-four efforts are a sole priority.
