Liverpool need to prove they deserve to keep Raheem Sterling, claims Heskey…

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has been the latest man to have his say on the Raheem Sterling contract saga, urging his old side to continue their recent improvements and prove they can match the player’s ambitions.

Heskey believes that Sterling will stay put this summer, but reasons that Brendan Rodgers’ side can end all debate over whether he should stay by finishing in the top four of the Premier League and winning the FA Cup.

As the Daily Mirror reports, Sterling recently turned down a contract extension worth around £100,000-per-week, almost treble what he’s currently earning, while he’s also hinted at his desire to move if it means more trophies.

However, Bolton forward Heskey believes we need to do everything within our power to keep him out of the hands of any domestic or European rival. Success between now and the end of the season would certainly help that, with the upcoming games against Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers likely to go along way to deciding our campaign.

Heskey told reporters: “He’s an individual who knows what he wants. He’s said some things, that it’s about trophies and winning things, and if Liverpool can show they can do that, I’m sure he will put pen to paper.

“I left Leicester for Liverpool for the same reason, because I wanted to win trophies. Hopefully they can show they are ambitious enough to win trophies and then he will sign.

“His progress has been immense, especially under Brendan Rodgers, so I don’t see why he should leave. You see a lot of young players leave clubs where they are making great progress and they go to another club and that stops.”
