Brendan Rodgers – Why Coutinho’s FA Cup goal was one of our best of the season

Was this the strike the best by a Reds player so far this season…?

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has lavished praise on Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho, who scored the only goal in Wednesday’s FA Cup quarter-final replay win over Blackburn Rovers.

The goal itself was a moment of pure inspiration in an otherwise frustratingly even-fought contest against our Championship opponents, who more than held their own over the 180 minutes.

A neat one-two with Jordan Henderson following a quickly taken set piece was soon followed by the 22-year-old lashing the ball past Simon Eastwood and sprinting over to the travelling fans with his arms aloft.

His goal not only booked us a semi-final meeting with Aston Villa at Wembley but it also eased the pressure on Rodgers and co following back-to-back Premier League defeats against Manchester United and Arsenal.

Speaking about the goal, Rodgers told our official website: “He had a lot of work to do.

“It seemed that he had a lot of space but to create the space it needed a wonderfully clever piece of play. His combination play in tight areas is top-class. It was a lovely touch by Jordan to play him into the space.

“He has gone in and he cuts across the ball; you see lots of players try to fire it in at the near post, but his technique is wonderful – it was a great finish.”

You can see the goal again from two brilliant angles in the clips below. Check out the technique as he finds the bottom corner of the net with inch-perfect accuracy…
