Where are they now? Liverpool’s 2006 FA Cup winning squad nine years on

The Reds took a giant stride towards their first piece of silverware under Brendan Rodgers on Wednesday, beating Blackburn Rovers 1-0 in the FA Cup thanks to a single Philippe Coutinho goal 20 minutes from time.

It’s almost nine years since Steven Gerrard inspired out last win in the competition, as we twice came from behind to eventually beat West Ham United on penalties at the Millennium Stadium.

And as we gear up for next weekend’s semi-final against Aston Villa, here’s a look at where the rest of that day’s squad are now…

GK) Pepe Reina

Spent last season on loan with Napoli. Joined Bayern Munich in the summer, ending a nine year association with the Reds. Currently serves as Manuel Neuer’s number two.

 

RB) Steve Finnan

Left Liverpool in 2008, joined Espanyol in La Liga. Returned to England a year later with Portsmouth before retiring in 2010.

LB) John Arne Riise

Spent time with Roma and Fulham, now with Cypriot team APOEL.

CB) Jamie Carragher

Retired in 2013 after spending his entire career with the Reds, now working for Sky Sports as a pundit.

CB) Sami Hyypia

Left Liverpool in 2009, joining Bayer Leverkusen. Retired in 2011 but became the German side’s manager a year later. Joined Brighton & Hove Albion last year but lasted just 26 games.

RM) Steven Gerrard

Still at Liverpool. Joins MLS side LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

CM) Xabi Alonso

Enjoyed great success with Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool, winning the Champions League last season. Now with Reina at Bayern Munich.

CM) Mohamed Sissoko

Spent time with Juventus and Paris Saint Germain after leaving Liverpool. Now with Levante in La Liga.

LM) Harry Kewell

Joined Galatasaray in 2008. Spent time with Melbourne Victory, Al-Gharafa and Melbourne Heart before hanging up his boots last year.

ST) Peter Crouch

Returned to Portsmouth after leaving Liverpool. Spent two years with Tottenham before joining Stoke in 2011.

ST) Djibril Cisse

Left Liverpool for Marseille, initially on loan, before making the move permanent in 2007. Has since been with Sunderland, Panathinaikos, Lazio, Queens Park Rangers, Al-Gharafa and Kuban Krasnodar. Now back in France with Bastia.

Jerzy Dudek

Left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2007. Spent four years in the Spanish capital before retiring.

Jan Kromkamp

Spent less than a year with the Reds, returning to Holland with PSV Eindhoven in 2006. Remained their until 2011, making sporadic appearances, before ending his career with the Go Ahead Eagles.

Djimi Traore

Joined Charlton Athletic shortly after this game. Followed that with time at Portsmouth, Rennes, Birmingham City, AS Monaco, Marseille and the Seattle Sounders. Now without a club.

Dietmar Hamann

Finished his club career with Manchester City and MK Dons after leaving Liverpool in 2006. Had a brief spell as manager of Stockport County in 2011.

Fernando Morientes

Joined Valencia after his one and only season at Anfield. Joined Marseille in 2009 before retiring the following year. Now back and playing with Santa Ana in the lower regions of Spain’s footballing pyramid.
