The 25-year-old has spent much of the season on the sidelines through injury. His almost five month lay-off – which ended in January – saw his manager take small steps to bring him back into the fold.

Despite the absence, Sturridge will still be slightly disappointed with his goal tally for the season. He has hit the back of the net just four times in twelve league appearances.

According to the Echo, he confirmed that while he and his teammates are yet to write off this season – with an FA Cup semi-final to come – he is looking forward to next year, believing that he will be a much larger threat, and in a better position to help Liverpool back towards to the league’s summit.

“I am just happy to be playing. I am looking forward to finishing this season on a high, but next season will be when you really see what I can do,” he explained.

The England international helped Brendan Rodgers’s men come so close to clinching their first Premier League title last year, after forming one of the top flight’s best partnerships alongside Luis Suarez. The SAS occupied the top two places in the league’s top goalscoring charts, bagging 52 strikes between them – twenty-one of which belonged to Sturridge.
