The ugly incident happened in the latter stages both countries’ final group game, which the South American side would go onto win 1-0, and subsequently progress to the knockout phase at the expense of their opponents.

An immediate ban would end the striker’s participation however, and leave him waiting until the late October to make his debut for new club Barcelona.

The four-month suspension from competitive action was the consequence of a third offence, the second of which came during his time with the Reds following an altercation with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.

However, the Daily Mail report that the 28-year-old has revealed that the two most recent incidents came after provocation from the two defenders, but admitted that they still represented the lowest periods in his career.

“The bite on Chiellini was the worst moment of my career,” he said.

“I let myself down, my country, my wife and my children. The bites were partly my fault and partly [due to] the provocation of Ivanovic and Chiellini. Now they continue provoking me,” the forward added.
