According to the Echo, the 20-year-old knocked back a deal that would have been worth £100,000 a week, leading to speculation that he was looking to leave the Reds. The winger subsequently completed an interview – unsanctioned by the club – revealing that he wanted to leave talks about extending his time with us until the end of the season. He also insisted that his decision to delay signing a new deal was not motivated by money.

Nevertheless, his apparent lack of gratitude towards Liverpool has led many to believe that he and his agent are just looking to engineer a move away – or possibly secure a more lucrative deal.

Lucas though believes that while Sterling’s future may be uncertain, you cannot question the winger’s commitment to Brendan Rodgers’ side.

“He’s been scoring important goals for us and that’s what makes people talk about him,” he said.

After a slightly difficult season for the club, Lucas is confident that if we can keep Sterling, there is no limit to what the team can achieve.

“He knew he had to add goals to his game and he’s doing that this season. I think he’s got everything. You see the way he plays and how quick he thinks, he could be on the stage of world-class players. He’s only young,” the Brazilian anchorman finished.
