Newcastle win vital to Liverpool’s Champions League hopes, says Dejan Lovren

The forward missed last night’s bout with Newcastle at Anfield after picking up a hip injury against Blackburn in our FA Cup quarterfinal replay at Ewood Park last Wednesday.

And whilst the Boss didn’t explicitly state Sturridge would be ready for Sunday’s match with Villa, he said we’d have a better indication in midweek at the stage of his recovery according to the BBC.

“By the middle of the week we’ll have a good indication of where he’s at,” said Rodgers.

“I’ll probably know more in the week. He said he feels reasonably fine.”

Meanwhile Mamadou Sakho will certainly be out of this weekend’s game after he suffered a hamstring injury against Blackburn.

The BBC believe it will keep him out for around four weeks.

It was another injury set-back for Sturridge last night, who must be as frustrated as anyone after a season which has seen him manage to score just four goals after injuries to his thigh, his calf, his thigh again and a hip injury whilst on international duty last month.

It’s no wonder we’ve struggled at times this season with such an unpredictable forward line and no consistency in who we can select.

If we can still manage to scrape into the top-four it will prove an impressive feat given our troubles and if the 25-year-old gets the well earned rest he deserves this summer to prepare for the next campaign expect him back to his best in August.
