Scouting eight potential backup keepers we could sign in the summer, from Ludogorets stopper to Kasper Schmeichel

With Brad Jones out-of-contract, the Reds are likely to be on the hunt for a new No. 2…

Simon Mignolet has been in fine form since the turn of the year, keeping 12 clean sheets in 23 appearances to ease the pressure on his role as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

However, with Brad Jones high on the list of potential departures from Anfield this summer, Brendan Rodgers will surely be on the lookout for a quality second choice stopper who’s also capable of challenging the Belgian for his spot in the team.

We’ve come up with a list of eight potential candidates who we think are all realistic possible summer signings. All these players would offer the security we need in the position and would likely be available on the cheap.

Take a look…

8) Costel Pantilimon (Sunderland)

The 28-year-old Romanian international picked up a Premier League winners medal in 2014, playing seven times for Manchester City. He’s since established himself as first choice for Sunderland, who could go down this season.

7) Sergio Romero (Sampdoria)

The Argentine guided his country to the World Cup final last summer with a series of strong performances. He’s out of contract this summer and could be available on a free transfer after struggling to establish his club spot.

6) Vladislav Stoyanov (Ludogorets)

The Bulgarian is another who is out of contract at the end of the season. He played against Liverpool earlier this season, featuring 11 times in his side’s run to the Champions League group stage, also taking on Real Madrid.

5) Neto (Fiorentina)

The 25-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season and as a former Brazilian youth team international has plenty of room still to grow. He was part of the team that won Olympic silver in London back in 2012.

4) Adam Bogdan (Bolton Wanderers)

Impressed against Liverpool in the FA Cup earlier this season but has struggled to hold down a first-team place with Bolton, where Andy Lonergan is regarded by most as the first-choice. Available on a free transfer.

3) Esteban Alvarado (AZ Alkmaar)

The 25-year-old won’t be widely known among Premier League fans but has a more than decent CV. Over 100 league games for his club side, who he joined in 2010, as well as international caps for Costa Rica, for whom he backs up Keylor Navas from the bench. Again, his contract is up in the summer.

2) Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City)

Like Pantilimon, a potential relegation could see him become available. There would be doubts over how open the son of a former Manchester United legend would be to a move to Anfield but there’s no concerns over his quality, especially as a backup stopper.

1) Artur Boruc (Southampton)

The Polish international fell behind Fraser Forster in the Southampton pecking order and has spent the season on loan with AFC Bournemouth. He’s helped the Cherries to the top of the Championship and could be a top target. He’d be an improvement on Jones, certainly.
