However, even the most loyal of Reds could not deny the fact that Gerrard, an iconic figure who has won us a multitude of games including an FA Cup final on his own, had a bad afternoon at Wembley against Aston Villa.

Nor would they attempt to claim that Rodgers, who masterminded our second place finish in the league last season – an incredible achievement considering our record in recent years – didn’t get it wrong with his team selection.
