Can we win the race for Depay?

Liverpool fans are reeling today following the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Aston Villa yesterday, but this piece of transfer news will intrigue supporters desperate for summer reinforcements following the 2-1 Wembley defeat…

Dutch publication De Telegraaf claims that Liverpool, along with French giants PSG, have been given permission by Dutch side PSV to speak with Memphis Depay.

The 21-year-old is the top scorer in the Eredivisie with 20 strikes so far, and is rated as one of the most talented youngsters in European football right now.

However, PSV’s technical director Marcel Brands confirmed on Dutch television (reported here in BBC Sport), that they’ve also had official contact with our rivals Manchester United regarding the availability of the excellent young attacker.

“We have had a telephone call from them [Man United] about him,” Brands said.

“But no talks have been held. Several top clubs have expressed interest.”

The Dutch report claims that PSV are looking for around 25-30m euros for Depay, which in this day and age, seems fairly reasonable – especially considering the fact that the player’s attributes and characteristics seem to suit us perfectly.

He’s rapid, technically strong, and scores goals – and has his best years ahead of him. FSG love to sign dynamic young talent, and Depay seems to tick all of the boxes in this regard.

However – if PSG and Man United are keen on his services, it will difficult for us to acquire him, due to their almost certain offer of Champions League and added financial clout.
